"Fall of the House of Usher"
The Fall of the House of Usher is definitely a piece written in Poe's usual style; a dark foreboding tale of death and insanity filled with imagery, allusion, and hidden meaning. It uses secondary meanings and underlying themes to show his beliefs and theories without actually addressing them. It convinces us without letting us know we're being convinced, and at the same time makes his complex thoughts relatively clear. (con't)
"The Issue of Abortion" by Warren
In Mary Anne Warren’s “The Abortion Issue,” children are not persons in the empirical sense. Warren believes that prior to a certain point in a pregnancy, the child does not have “the capacity to understand” the ramifications of what an abortion would be, therefore the abortion does not infringe upon the rights of the unborn fetus. She states that: “…in the ways that matter from a moral point of view, human fetuses are very unlike human persons, particularly in their early months of development”. In essence, personhood as defined by Warren can only come after the first trimester. Before that time, the fetus does not have the sentience that would make it a person. Warren’s main criteria for what makes a person will be considered first, then we will move on to her argument on sentience, and the differences she notes between a fetus and an infant. (con't)
About Bipolar Disease
What is bipolar disease? Bipolar disorders (manic-depressive illness) are
marked by periods of manic, greatly elated moods or excited states as well as by
periods of depression. Although the manic-depressive psychosis may alternate
from one of its phases to the other, one or the other phase is usually dominant
for a while. Depression is more often dominant than mania. Manic-depressive
patients often recover spontaneously for periods of time, but relapses are
fairly common. Most often this disease is genetic. Bipolar is a severe mental
disorder. There are 2 types of the bipolar diseases: Bipolar 1 & bipolar 2. (con't)
Literary Review of "The Dead Poet’s Society"
One of the 20th centuries most compelling and best films goes by the title
Dead Poets Society. This movie is set at the Helton Academy for Boys in 1959.
The movie focuses in on a small group of boys. They have been sent to this
preparatory school, most against their will, and have been forced to conform.
However, they come across an English professor, Mr. Keating, whose lesson plan
contradicts the entire schools mentality. He taught that to conform was to die.
Carpe Diem – seize the day. He taught the boys to march to the beat of their own
drummer, to suck the marrow out of life, but above all never conform. They
didn’t. The students reformed the Dead Poet’s Society. For this they were
punished. None of the boys suffered from their nonconformity more than their
leader Neil. He joined a play without his father’s consent. His father told him
that he would be going to a military school and would never be in the theatre
again. Thus, Neil felt he would rather die. Hence, he committed suicide. As Mr.
Keating left the boys all stood and addressed him one last time as “O’ captain.
My captain.” This movie is perhaps one of the greatest movies of all time. (con't)
Islam - More Than A Religion
Despite its huge following around the world and the growing Muslim
communities in the United States, Islam is foreign to most Americans who are
familiar with Christianity or Judaism. Because most Americans know little or
nothing about Islam, they have many misconceptions about Muslim beliefs and
rituals. The negative image many people in the United States and Europe have
of Islam and the Muslim world has a long history. Many have judged Islam
without making an effort to consider this religious tradition on its own terms,
without bothering to become acquainted with its teaching and the ways in which
Muslims practice their faith. (con't)
